Abstract
This article provides materials that demonstrate the extensive use of Linux in the life of the world society and the rating score of Linux distributions by well-known global companies. Linux, as it is well known, is formed into distributions. Today there exists a situation that many varieties of distributions arise and develop. In addition, each distribution has its own configuration and types of core and environment.
There are two main reasons that have created this situation. The first reason is in the type of distribution license. Types of licenses are very different. Licenses can have options ranging from completely free to exclusively commercial. The second reason is that Linux has the very popular use in the world today. Every use of Linux has its own conditions and objectives. Therefore, the distribution of Linux install packages has different characteristics in terms of type, quantity and configuration.
The main features that distinguish individual Linux distributions are: requirements for hardware; graphical shell used (for example, KDE, MATE, GNOME or CINNAMON); availability of localization tools that support the necessary languages; media from which the system can be launched; organization of the system boot procedure (BSD or System V); packet management system used (for example, apt or dpkg on Debian, rpm or dnf on Fedora); history or pedigree of the distribution; composition of the base installed software; presence and composition of commercial software included in the distribution; management tools of provided system.
Leading companies and bloggers of the world constantly create ratings of the use of Linux distributions in the world. This article was created based on these researches in 2018.
